Engineering

Engineering - One of the most popular courses in India

Engineering is one of  the most preferred courses in India in the recent times. Lakhs of students across the country register and appear for engineering entrance exams every year, to fulfill their dreams of pursuing a course from their desired engineering college.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which is the most prestigious engineering institute in India, is the first choice for most of the students in India. However, only the top layer gets into the IITs. Students also target a number of other reputed engineering colleges, located at different corners of the country. Most students, while preparing to get into the IITs also have a secondary, back-up college in their mind.
Till last two engineering exams –IIT-JEE and the AIEEE were most popular among the students. However, from this year AIEEE has been scrapped and CBSE is conducting a single overarching entrance exam, called the JEE. This exam is a gateway to IITs, NITs and other central engineering institutes. Nearly, 14 lakh candidates took the JEE (main) exam on April 7, Sunday.

Why do a majority of students join the engineering field?

·    Less time consuming, more returns

Medicine and engineering have traditionally been the two most popular courses, opted for by Indian students. This is because these two courses have the best career prospects in comparison to other professions in India. Lately, among engineering and medicine, engineering has gained popularity due to more attractive placement packages and ample jobs available for engineering graduates in the market. Studying engineering for 4 years in a reputed college gets engineering graduate a decent job. Some students also pursue higher studies after course completion. However, choosing medicine is essentially putting in 5 years to study basic medicine. After that a student is required to pursue further specialization, which takes another 3 years. Overall, pursuing medicine takes double the time than pursuing an engineering program.

·     High demand

With the advent of information technology and globalization there is a global shortage of personnel with technical skills. With the rapid growth of Asian economies, there is simultaneous growth in the requirement for infrastructure in these countries. Hence, a massive requirement for engineers is felt by these countries. Apart from this, engineers are required across sectors, in the fields of defense, electronics, communication, construction, mining, etc. Hence, there is always a requirement for a skilled engineer and the job prospects for an engineer are high. Moreover, engineering jobs are well paying and usually secure, and since engineers have to deal with real world problems on a daily basis, engineering jobs are challenging and fulfilling as well. In addition to this, diverse roles are available to engineers and it’s no wonder that engineering is so sought after! People with different interests from aeronautics to marine biology can find jobs of their choice in the engineering field.

·   Attractive Remuneration

Engineers often command a high pay package, and are valued employees in any company. Most reputed engineering institutions feature campus placements, where prestigious companies make high offers to students. Even engineering students who are not part of campus placements usually get paid better than students in any other field. An engineering fresher from a reasonably reputed institution can earn anywhere between Rs. 4, 00,000 to Rs. 5, 00,000 p.a. Graduates from the IITs earn a lot more than this and are often picked up by companies even before the completion of their course. The above average pay package, ensures that engineers enjoy a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. Engineers can enjoy frequent vacations and holidays abroad, to take a break from their schedules.

·    Availability of ample career opportunities

There are several career opportunities available for engineering students in India. From Indian Engineering Services (IES) to jobs in Public Sector Unit (PSU), from research and development to teaching, the diversity of engineering careers allows an engineer to choose a career of his or her choice. Engineers can join state engineering services, civil services, banking sectors, MBA, defense services etc. or can opt for abroad studies after clearing GMAT or GRE. Down the years, the competition has been tough in the engineering field, but engineering still prevails as one of the most popular course among numerous students in India.

Rush Off

Competitions In Our Country

The moment we finish our board we get to know either from our family or from our friends about or goals and aims. It happens always that we get carried away with the glamours of the mind blowing terms that the MNC's are using now-a-days to attract the youth and at the doorstep of the age group it never seems wonders.
Back in 2001 when i finished my board exams i was not quite sure about the path to choose and how to accelerate my life. From our part of the world (Bihar) there were only two verticals, i.e. Engg. & Med. I was not even planning to go into the medical field and engg. was really not my cup of tea. So, in this kind of scenario and the family pressure created a different effect on me.
I tried to get into the engg. field by these competitive exams and the strategy that they plan in the coaching classes throughout the nation however i was not convinced with the pattern and result was as expected.
I really feel now that IF, I had been an engg. But life and luck both really never comes on the same track.
In hyderbad a boarding school is really doing a nice work in terms of competitive exams for Medical, IIT and SAT. It offers a yearlong classroom programme for students with boarding facility. The facilities are really good and students are getting exposed to the hardcore studies to compete with the world. Name of the institute is excellencia and it's located in shamirpet, hyderabad.
Stay tuned for more realistic updates from my life.
Cheers,
RH
